Chapter 17

The electric power in Noreen’s condominium flashed off at 9:38 a.m., and so far she’d sweated through two hours without the relief of her air conditioner on the hot June day. She’d phoned in to report her outage to the electric company and got the recording of a lady who informed Noreen the estimated wait could last anywhere from four to six hours before they restored the electric current. Then the lady had the gall to tell Noreen to have a nice day.

“How can I have a nice day when I’m roasting like a peanut in my condominium?” she asked.

However, the lady had disconnected, and Noreen was left speaking into the dead smart phone. She tossed it aside. Hitting her condominium complex’s swimming pool was her best course of action. However, Noreen remembered the kids swim teams had their practice at this hour, and the pool was off-limits to the adults until the kids had finished. Every time this summer she’d wanted to enjoy the pool, it’d been closed to her for one reason or other. She’d a clear memory of using her credit card number when the condominium association billed her back in March.

At the time, she’d had summery visions of her relaxing in the sun or shade on an outdoor chaise lounge. She’d wear cheap sunglasses and read a cheap paperback while she sipped cheap soda through a cheap straw. So far this summer, she hadn’t once gotten to the poolside. Next March, she’d be less enthusiastic to take out her credit card when the not-so-cheap bill for the dues arrived in the mail.

Noreen felt the urge to vent her displeasure, but Rick had gone shopping again. If the obstinate man didn’t break down and buy his new digital camera, she was going to give him a stern piece of her mind. How many cameras did he need to check out before he rendered his final decision?

I’d offer you a shiny penny for your thoughts, but it’s too hot for me to shake one out of my piggy bank.

Noreen saw Snoozy Q sitting by her feet. “Mercy yes, isn’t it getting awful?” she said. “I’m so hot I could fry an egg on top of my head.”

I’d better just take your word for it rather than ask you to show me. Is there any hint of relief in sight?

“The lady at the power company informed me the wait can be anywhere from four to six hours.”

What’s that again? Quit tweaking me.

“Would I joke about running the air conditioner on a hot summer day? The best thing I can suggest is to hunker down and think cool thoughts.”

Is there any chance you’ll cool me as the servants did swishing the round fans on the long poles for the pharaohs?

“Get out of here. If anything, you should be the one fanning me. I’m the mistress of the house.”

Then let’s quickly change the topic. Where’s Rick?

“That man will send me off the deep end yet. He’s off shopping again for his new digital camera.
